Ghost stock or Phantom inventory, is inventory that appears to be available in a retailer's inventory system but does not accurately reflect the stock that can actually be sold or fulfilled.
For a Shopify merchant, this can mean products appear to have inventory available even though the underlying stock position may be unreliable. These discrepancies can develop through incorrect adjustments, fulfilment issues, returns, multiple inventory locations, operational mistakes or stock records that have gradually drifted away from reality.
Ghost stock matters because inventory decisions depend on accurate data. If the numbers in Shopify cannot be trusted, merchants may make purchasing, merchandising and fulfilment decisions based on inventory that is not really there.
