A cycle count is a physical check of a small batch of stock, done regularly, instead of counting your entire inventory all at once.
A full stocktake, where you count literally everything in the building, is a lot of work. Most stores can't reasonably do it every week.
A cycle count is the smaller, more sustainable version of the same idea. Instead of counting everything, you check a handful of specific items on a rolling basis, often the ones that look like they might need it most.
Counting ten SKUs properly is a lot more useful than a rushed count of ten thousand. Cycle counts let you actually verify the items that matter right now, rather than putting off any checking until a big once-a-year event.
This is the idea behind Start Count. When a SKU gets flagged as worth checking, that's effectively a cycle count candidate, one specific item, checked now, rather than waiting for a full stocktake to eventually catch it.
