Stranded Inventory

Inventory Management

Stranded inventory is stock that shows as available in your system, but sits at a location that can't actually fulfil orders, so it's effectively unsellable.

Stranded inventory is a specific, and specifically sneaky, kind of stock problem. The product looks fine. Available quantity is positive. But every unit of it is sitting somewhere that can't actually ship it.

The most common cause

In Shopify stores with more than one location, this usually happens when a location gets deactivated, an old warehouse, a closed pop-up, a fulfilment partner you stopped using, but the stock that was assigned to it never gets moved. Shopify keeps the number. It just stops treating that location as somewhere orders can come from.

Why it's easy to miss

Nothing about the product page looks wrong. The stock count is still there. It's only when you check where that stock physically sits that the problem becomes obvious.

This is one of the more specific things Ghost Stock looks for. If a variant's entire available stock sits at inactive locations, with none at any active one, that's flagged directly, because it's something we can actually confirm, not just suspect.
